HMP Northward has confirmed that two prisoners were injured following an incident that occurred at the prison on Monday, 11 May.

In a press release issued on 13 May by the Ministry of District Administration and Home Affairs, officials said, “The incident was identified by prison officers, who responded in accordance with established security and medical protocols. Both prisoners were assessed by medical personnel at the prison and were subsequently transported to George Town Hospital for further medical assessment.”

The ministry added that “Both [prisoners] were treated and returned to HMP Northward without further incident.”

The matter has been referred to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service for investigation. The ministry noted, “As the incident is subject to a police investigation and involves security-sensitive prison operations, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the circumstances of the incident at this time.”
