The battle to contain a blaze at a landfill site on Cayman Brac that sparked a health warning continued on Thursday.
Environmental health officials said that the dump remained closed while work to install special covers designed to smother the fire went on.
They repeated that people downwind of the dump should keep doors and windows closed and limit outside activity in areas affected by smoke.
The caution came after smoke and flames were spotted at the landfill site on Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters have been dealing with the blaze since Tuesday.
An environmental health spokesman said on Wednesday, “There remains smoke generating from the site, but this is reducing.
“The department of environmental health is working to place cover materials over the area to reduce this impact further.”
The landfill was declared off limits on Wednesday as the covering work and damping down of the fire site went on.
Officials said the cause of the blaze was unknown, but it is thought that recently deposited trash ignited and caused the fire.
