This year’s list of Atlantic basin storm names begins with Andrea and ends with Wendy.

The World Meteorological Organization is responsible for naming Atlantic storms and hurricanes, using a rotating list of names that are recycled every six years.

The lists alternate between male and female names in alphabetical order. If a storm causes significant damage or loss of life, its name is retired and replaced with a new one on the next rotation.

This year’s list is reused from 2019, except for ‘Dexter’, which replaced ‘Dorian’. Hurricane Dorian was one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record, and the strongest to ever hit the Bahamas. The storm caused catastrophic damage, and the name was retired.

If more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in a season, a supplemental list of names is used. Previously, additional names were taken from the Greek alphabet, however that practice was retired in 2020.

The supplemental list of names includes all the letters of the alphabet apart from Q, U, X, Y and Z, as is the practice with the standard list. That’s because there aren’t many names that start with those letters.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins 1 June and ends 30 Nov. every year.
