The long summer months may seem daunting for parents and carers looking to entertain children.
However, Cayman offers a multitude of activities, both free and paid for, for all interests and ages.
Here is a selection of some of the fun to be had:
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Immerse your kiddos in Caymanian culture this year, with visits to Pedro St. James, the Cayman Islands National Museum, and the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands.
As well as its art collections, the National Gallery offers a Culture Keepers Summer Passport Programme, whereby families are encouraged to visit six culture and heritage sites, collect stamps at each location after following activity prompts, and are awarded a culture keepers pin upon completion.
NATURE AND ANIMALS
Animal lovers can enjoy the Parrot Sanctuary in East End, Turtle Centre in West Bay and pony rides at the Equestrian Centre.
Visit the Blue Iguana Conservation facility at the Botanic Park to learn about captive breeding efforts, or become a dog-walking family by volunteering at the Cayman Islands Humane Society.
INDOOR PLAY
For rainy or extremely hot days there are many indoor activities on-island. Gyms such as The Rec Room Kids, Motions Unlimited, My First Gym, and Apex Gymnastics, offer drop-in activities to keep kids active.
Lil Monkeys in Bodden Place provides an indoor playground perfect for the youngest members of the family.
Rock climbing, bowling and in-line skating can be enjoyed at Kings Sports Centre, while Laser Tag at Strike Zone is perfect for children aged 6 and older, and Virtual Reality at Matrix for kids aged 8 and older.
Don’t forget the cinema at Camana Bay – as well as regular movie showtimes, they offer a Kids Club with classic family favourites shown on Saturdays at 10am.
ACTIVE
For those with sporty little ones looking to blow off some steam, try pickleball at Cayman Pickleball and Tennis Academy, The Roost, or The Courts at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
Book a court for pickleball or tennis at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club in South Sound, or try your hand at squash in the next door South Sound Squash Club.
Play a full round of golf, or just hit the driving range at North Sound Golf Club or The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
Test out the island’s parks and playgrounds as you travel between the districts. Find a selection here.
ART
Creatives can look for group classes or drop-in opportunities at one of the many on-island creative studios – Art Nest and 3 Girls & a Kiln are two great places to check out.
CAMPS
Cayman knows how to do it when it comes to camps during school breaks. There is a plethora to choose from, whether your child is an avid karate kid, a synchronised swimmer, or a football fanatic. There is something for everyone.
WATER FUN
Summer heat requires cooling down, and when the beach seems too much of an undertaking, Cayman offers numerous spots for a quick splash.
CAMANA BAY FOUNTAINS
With multiple fountain areas to choose from, Camana Bay makes a great stop to cool off during the summer heat. Small fountains near the cinema are perfect for toddlers and babies, while bigger children can run through the larger water streams at The Crescent. Don’t forget the triangle water features in Canella Court for little ones who just want to run their fingers through the currents.
STARFISH CAY – THE RITZ-CARLTON, GRAND CAYMAN
Get a day pass to Starfish Cay waterpark for hours of fun on the slides. Parents can laze on deck chairs or under the cabanas while kids tire themselves out under the enormous plunge bucket. If staycationing at the hotel, you can enjoy the park for free.
SPLASH – KIMPTON SEAFIRE RESORT + SPA
The newest water park on the block, SPLASH is situated on the northern side of the property. Day passes can be purchased based on availability, or access enjoyed for free for those staying at the resort. Open for kids aged 12 and younger.
THE GROVE FOUNTAINS
Another easy stop for cooling off, The Grove on West Bay Road has small fountains conveniently placed near restaurants. Adults can enjoy lunch at Island Naturals while watching kids play. Check out the Cayman Parrot living sculpture while you are there.
BOTANIC PARK SPLASH PAD
As well as enjoying all the natural wonders the Botanic Park has to offer, the Children’s Garden is a great draw. Featuring a splash pad, observation tower, maze and tunnel area.
TURTLE CENTRE
After touching turtles, seeing the shark feeding, wandering the aviary and visiting Smiley the croc, kids can enjoy the Turtle Twister Waterslide and the waterfall at Breaker’s Lagoon, which also offers an underwater view of Predator Reef.
