Police are looking for thieves who used a backhoe in a failed bid to make off with cash from a Credit Union ATM in Savannah in the early morning hours of 5 Oct.

A press release by the Credit Union said the ATM sustained no damage and no cash was lost. However, the building sustained unspecified damage.

In their press release, the RCIPS said they responded to the Countryside Shopping Village just before 4:45am.

“Information suggests that someone driving and operating a heavy equipment vehicle attempted to gain entry to the Credit Union’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) by damaging the glass and concrete structure,” the police statement said.

The police statement added that the perpetrator exited the heavy equipment vehicle and left the location in a white coloured pickup truck. The person has not been identified, and no arrests have been made.

The backhoe, which has been removed from the location, was later confirmed to have been taken without the owner’s consent.

The Credit Union said the ATM will remain closed until repairs to the building can be completed.

Customers were advised to use the Credit Union’s other ATM locations – at their headquarters on Huldah Avenue and at the Government Administration building in George Town.

Police are seeking the assistance of witnesses. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Bodden Town Police Station at 947-2220.
