About $2,000 worth of damage has been caused and cash stolen in an early morning break-in at a street food truck in George Town.

A thief broke into Curry in a Hurry along the waterfront on Seafarers Way at about 3am on Thursday, 8 Jan.

The burglar, who smashed his way into the premises with a brick, ransacked the inside and stole about $200 from the cash register as well as other items.

The owner of the restaurant said operations were back to normal.

Nearby businesses said the incident had alarmed them, especially as another business was broken into just weeks ago.

One owner said, “The waterfront has become an easy target now and is being overlooked since several businesses moved to other locations.”

Curry in a Hurry’s owner added that the business had also been targeted on Wednesday night, when someone attempted to break into the small premises using a stone, a chair from the restaurant’s outdoor area and a metal rod.

But the would-be thief gave up the attempt, which was reported to police, and left.

Police said the Thursday break-in was reported at about 8.20am on Thursday morning and that a 37-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A police spokesperson said, “Businesses in general are advised to maintain security systems with working and clear CCTV cameras and not to store large amounts of cash on premises.

“These two steps enable faster investigations, while minimising the extent of loss in the even a burglary does occur.”

A jewellery store on nearby Fort Street was hit by armed robbers on Saturday, 13 Dec.

Two masked men, one with what appeared to be a firearm, smashed display cases and escaped with jewellery.
