As the Cayman Compass marks six decades of the newspaper being published, a limited edition Caybrew craft beer has been made to toast the occasion. Created in partnership with Cayman Islands Brewery, Brewcaster Lager pays homage to the brewery’s flagship beverage and Compass Media’s broadcast TV, radio and streaming platforms.

Fun artwork

The playful pictures on the can depict the newspaper’s long history in the Cayman Islands, with old logos and front covers skilfully incorporated into the design.

On the lager logo, the open pages of the newspaper are shown in gold to match the colour of the word ‘Brewcaster’.

And an iconic blue iguana – a species of large lizard found only in Grand Cayman – can also been seen sitting cross-legged in front of palm tree wallpaper, reading a copy of the Compass.

Even the recently re-designed Compass logo can be found in the row of symbols underneath the recycling information, while the Compass Media branding colours have been skilfully included throughout.

Currently the beer is only available to staff, as well as clients at Compass events.

“We wanted to celebrate the 60th anniversary with an adult drink that everyone can enjoy,” says publisher Tripp Donnelly. “We’ve done this in a fun way that denotes the history of the newspaper, while also reflecting our modern era in which the Compass has expanded to be an omnichannel company with print, digital and broadcast platforms.

“We are pleased to make a toast with staff and clients to the 60th anniversary, and would love to hear from anyone drinking the beer how many subtle signs of the Compass they can find on the can.”

Co-designed

The artwork was co-designed by Donnelly and Richy O’Carroll from Compass Media, along with Rob Barton from the Cayman brand and design studio Big Panda.

“It was a privilege to design a can that brings together two Cayman icons, Caybrew and the Compass,” says Barton.

“Our aim was to create artwork that strikes a balance between playfulness and timelessness, interlacing the Compass’ storied history with symbols intrinsic to Cayman’s identity, the treasured blue iguana being an obvious fit.

“The result is a design that not only celebrates 60 years of storytelling, but also underscores the Compass’ role as a brand synonymous with community and celebration.”

As well as Caybrew, which is styled as the premium beer of the Cayman Islands, Cayman Islands Brewery makes a number of other specialty beers and drinks.

“At Caybrew, we’re incredibly proud to have partnered on the Brewcaster project – an inspiring tribute to 60 years of dedication to the Cayman community,” says brewery brand manager Mark Haring. “It’s an honour to celebrate their legacy and raise a toast to the journey ahead.”
