A student was found in possession of a knife while travelling on the bus to Red Bay Primary School on the morning of Thursday, 20 Nov.
The Department of Education Services issued a statement on Thursday afternoon saying it was responding to the incident. It is not yet known how old the student is or how the knife came to be discovered.
Department of Education Services director Mark Ray said, “The wellbeing of our students and staff is central to everything we do. We take any matter that may compromise safety very seriously and remain committed to fostering an environment in which all members of the school community feel secure and respected.”
Investigation underway
Red Bay Primary has begun its own internal investigations into the incident and is following established procedures to address the situation, including engaging with the parents of the student involved, as well as reaching out to any students who may have been directly affected.
Ray added, “We are working closely with the school’s leadership to ensure that students who were on the bus at the time of the incident have access to appropriate counselling and support. Our priority is to help them process the experience and to reaffirm that their safety is always our greatest concern.”
In a letter sent to parents and guardians by Red Bay Primary’s Principal, Ryan Dale said, “I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred this morning involving one of our students.
“While on the way to school, a knife was found in the possession of a student travelling on one of our school buses. Our bus warden was vigilant and acted quickly and appropriately, ensuring that the knife was immediately confiscated and that all students remained safe.
“Following this, we initiated our internal investigation procedures, including meeting with the parents of the student involved and any students directly affected. We also activated our crisis management team, which included providing counselling support for all students who were on the bus at the time of the incident.
“Please be assured that this matter has been escalated to the highest level and is being dealt with by the relevant authorities and agencies in line with our safeguarding protocols.
“We understand that news of this nature can be concerning. We want to reassure you of our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of every child in our care. The vigilance of our staff, along with our established safeguarding procedures, helped to ensure that students were kept safe throughout.
