Police arrested two suspects Friday after receiving reports of a man rifling through beachgoers’ bags at Smith Barcadere.
Police attended the beach on South Church Street shortly after 9am and found a man fitting the description of the person searching through the unattended bags. They also found another man “behaving suspiciously” nearby.
When they searched the men, they found a knife, ganja and a substance police believe to be cocaine.
The suspects, aged 42 and 46, both residents of George Town, were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, possession of cocaine, possession of ganja, and other drug-related offences.
By Saturday afternoon, both men remained in custody pending further investigation, police said.
“The public is being reminded to avoid leaving valuable items unattended and to keep their properties within their sights while enjoying the beaches,” the RCIPS said in a statement.
