Firefighters and Coast Guard sailors joined forces to respond to a fire on a stolen boat found in a canal.

The two services extinguished the blaze on the white 37ft Intrepid Cuddy after they were alerted to smoke billowing from the 2003 vessel, which was found in the Patrick’s Island area of George Town.

No one was injured, but the boat was burned almost to the waterline.

The incident happened at about 5.30am on Monday, 13 April and it was later discovered that the boat, last seen on Monday, 6 April, had been reported stolen from an address in the Newlands area.

Police said that the incident was being treated as a theft, but that the cause of the fire was also under investigation.
