A 55-year-old Cayman Brac man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a two-vehicle collision on Dennis Foster Road in Cayman Brac on 16 May.

According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, officers on patrol came upon the collision at around 9.20pm in the vicinity of Wellington Park Close.

The crash involved a Honda Pilot Elite SUV and a Hyundai Grand I-10, both of which sustained damage.

Police said officers spoke with and breath tested both drivers at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai was found to be under the legal limit. However, the driver of the Honda was found to be over the limit and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The driver of the Hyundai complained of pain following the collision and was transported by EMS to Faith Hospital for treatment for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers from the Cayman Islands Fire Service also attended the scene and assisted with clearing the roadway and securing the vehicles.

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns over drink-driving and road safety in the Cayman Islands.

A recent investigation conducted by the Cayman Compass found that more than half of positive roadside breath tests over a two-year period occurred after crashes, suggesting many impaired drivers are detected only after collisions occur.

The RCIPS 2025 Annual Crime and Traffic Statistics Report recorded 277 DUI prosecutions in 2025, with police noting that 65% of offenders were at least double the legal alcohol limit and 25% were three times or more over the limit. Police also said excess alcohol was a contributing factor in a number of fatal or serious crashes during the year.

Police have previously said Cayman’s traffic laws prevent officers from conducting random roadside breath testing unless they have reasonable suspicion that a driver is impaired.

The accident in Cayman Brac remains under investigation by the RCIPS.
