The May Classics cycling series has officially crossed the finish line after four stops across the island.

The annual series kicked off with the technical West Bay Circuit on 10 May followed by the remaining three stops where riders battled fiercely for individual race glory and the ultimate series titles.

The action resumed on 17 May with the South Sound 9.6-mile Individual Time Trial, where competitors raced against the clock.

Thomas Horsburgh claimed first in Category 1 with a time of 21:06, while MacDonald Machingura secured the top spot in Category 2 at 23:49.

Greg Bermosky claimed victory in Category 3 with a time of 22:27, and Carl Morgan took the Category 4 win in 24:14.

In the Women’s category, Emily Clarke secured the winning time of 24:23 while Carlos Vargas took the Masters title in 27:43. Rich Payne topped the Senior Masters category (50+) in 24:44, and Ryan Thompson sped to victory in the Junior category with a 19:56 time.

Thompson rewrote the record books with his time at an average speed of 28.7 mph, lowering the previous times of 20:36 set by Steve Abbott in 2015 and the 20:16 mark set by visitor James Bailey at Cayman Cycling’s FitCheck event last November.

East End race

The following day, on 18 May, the peloton moved out east for the third stop of the series – the East End Road Race.

John Thompson surged ahead to take first place in Category 1, while Neville Morgan Jr. climbed to the top of Category 2.

Bermosky secured his second consecutive victory in Category 3, and Jason Bush crossed the line first in Category 4.

All defending their top spots in their respective categories were Emily Clarke in the Women’s category, Carlos Vargas in the Masters category, Rich Payne in the Senior Masters category and Ryan Thompson in the Junior category.

Grand finale

The grand finale took place on 24 May at the CostULess Circuit, providing a fast and furious conclusion to the month’s racing.

Jerome Ameline captured the final Category 1 victory, Andy Teixara broke through to win Category 2, and Bermosky completed a consecutive three-race sweep by winning Category 3.

Carl Morgan returned to the top step for Category 4, while Emily Clarke finished the series flawlessly with another victory in the Women’s category.

Carlos Vargas and Rich Payne remained undefeated in the Masters and Senior Masters categories respectively, and Patryk Plata wrapped up the series with a top-podium finish in the Junior category.

With all four races officially in the books, the overall Rubis champion podium honouring the best performances across the entire four-race series was crowned with Ameline taking the ultimate first-place title, followed by Plata in second, Jeremy Solomon in third, Valerio Lodigiani in fourth, and Ryan Thompson rounding out the top five.

Also included in the race on 24 May was the Kiddies Dash which was distances up to 200-metres for children 10 and under.

Additionally, a Hot Lap for those aged 11 and older gave participants the opportunity to complete an entire lap of the course. They were accompanied by adult racers who just completed their event, along with parents who were experienced cyclists.
