The Cayman Islands Cycling Association marked International Women’s Day on Sunday, 8 March, with a group ride designed to highlight the local female cycling community.

Tracy Rankine, vice president of the Cayman Islands Cycling Association, said, “In recent years, Cayman Cycling has facilitated a weekend group ride to mark International Women’s Day, but this year was a bit more special as the official date fell on the most active cycling day of the week in Cayman.”

The 20-mile route saw nine women – and several men from the local cycling community – depart from the former Paradise restaurant site at 6:30am and head straight into West Bay.

“Our goal was to highlight the small but growing number of female cyclists that are active on island with a ride at a speed that is not quite as high paced, which allowed for a bit more social connection. Confidence building was also a key objective and to develop this the entire 20-mile route had the women at the front of the peloton and leading the way,” she added.

Although the ride was women focused, Rankine shared that several local male cyclists came out to support the women on the journey.

Reflecting on the male cyclists for a moment, Rankine said, “The vast majority of competitive/fitness cyclists on island and globally are men and this ride would have been incomplete without them.

“They made up more than half of the peloton and supported the day by being our riding companions, photo/video team, driving a support vehicle which followed our group and also manning key intersections to ensure that it was safe to proceed,” she added.
