The Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s Premier League crown remains firmly in the hands of Sunset Football Club.
The league, which kicked off last year on 4 Oct., featured 15 games among six local clubs facing each other three times with the title decided by the final points standings.
The remaining five teams completing the league’s roster were Scholars International Sports Club, Elite Sports Club, Academy Sports Club, Fusion Sports Club and Latinos Football Club.
The definitive moment of Sunset FC’s championship campaign arrived on Saturday, 16 May, at the CIFA Centre For Excellence field, against their second-place rivals Scholars ISC who they defeated 7-0.
The scoring opened early in the eighth minute with a goal from Sunset’s team captain Kinsey Joiner, followed by Ava Degrand in the 27th minute. Reese Bateson extended the lead in the 33rd minute to close out the first half.
Degrand struck again in the 53rd minute, and Daniella Gourzong added another just two minutes later in the 55th. In the final minutes of the match, Jada Dixon-Lam scored in the 84th minute before Gourzong secured her second goal in the 86th minute to cap off the scoring.
Going into that match, a victory would push Sunset nine points clear with only two games left on the schedule, mathematically sealing the league.
This definitive victory secured the top spot on the podium for Sunset FC, leaving Scholars ISC to finish second and Elite Sports Club in third.
The league’s top goal scorer was Bateson of Sunset FC with 13 goals, followed by Daian Moreno Rodrigues of Academy Sports Club with 12 goals and Courtney Hicks of Elite Sports Club with 11 goals.
From the sidelines, Sunset FC was led to victory by coaches Gisela ‘GG’ Gamba, Freddy Köhler-Krüner and Tony De Quintal.
Reflecting on the monumental achievement, Gamba said, “This victory is a reflection of many years of hard work and commitment. We have built a very strong girls’ programme over the past 12 years, and many of the players on our women’s team started playing with us when they were just four years old.”
She added, “While winning is always rewarding, our focus has always been on developing the whole person. We strive to build confident young women and healthy human beings, using football as a vehicle for growth. Seeing these players succeed after so many years of dedication makes this achievement especially meaningful.”
