Being prepared can make a real difference when it comes to responding to an emergency.
Ensuring homes and workplaces are equipped with essential medical tools can drastically improve the outcome of a health-related crisis.
Two of the most important lifesaving items to have on hand are a first aid kit and an automated external defibrillator (AED).
First aid kit
First aid kits can be assembled at home or purchased from organisations such as the Cayman Islands Red Cross.
AED
An AED is a portable electronic medical device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed to be used by non-medical personnel – including bystanders, teachers, firefighters and police officers – making them invaluable in time-critical situations.
The Cayman Heart Foundation has donated AEDs and CPR kits to government schools, public facilities and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, enabling frontline officers to respond quickly if emergencies arise.
To help the public locate defibrillators and improve Cayman’s readiness during cardiac emergencies, Lifeline has launched the PulsePoint AED app for Apple and Android. This free app displays a map with the location of every rescue-ready AED across the islands.
Each AED listed on the live map has been inspected and verified by volunteers with the non-profit organisation.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Workplaces
Workplaces should ensure they have at least one staff member trained in CPR and another trained in first aid, along with personnel familiar with AED operation.
Companies should also maintain up-to-date records of staff medical conditions and next-of-kin information, as well as ensure evacuation routes and meeting points are clearly established.
Individuals with medical conditions
For individuals with medical conditions, a MedicAlert pack – developed and distributed by Hazard Management Cayman Islands – can be invaluable during an emergency. The pack provides first responders with quick and ready access to critical information such as medical history, medications, and allergies.
To use it, simply fill out the two-sided information sheet and place inside the fridge alert envelope, which adheres to your refrigerator door. Then attach the fridge alert sticker to a front window so paramedics know that potentially life-saving information is available inside.
