Last weekend, the Cayman Islands Golf Association wrapped up its 2026 Junior Island Championship, showcasing a packed field of 58 young local golfers.

The tournament, held on 6-7 June, featured tight races in the main championship tiers alongside strong turnouts in the development and recreational divisions.

Marko Rando took home the Boys Championship Division title after shooting rounds of 77 and 72. His final-round 72 was exactly what he needed to narrowly beat Matthew Dodson by a single stroke.

The Girls Championship Division saw Katie Walton secure the title with rounds of 83 and 78, with Tilly Lomas finishing as runner-up.

Finn McBain put together two rounds of 80 and 78 to claim the Boys 13 and Under Division title.

In the Boys Development Division, Hugo Chaloner secured top honours by carding a 93 on and 88, finishing ahead of second-place finisher Richard Ecke.

The tournament also gave newer golfers a taste of competitive tournament play through several 9-hole recreational divisions.

Josette Hawkins won the Intermediate Tee Division with a score of 48, followed by Johnny Watkins who took second place. Blake Burt claimed first place in the Beginner Tee Division with a score of 47, narrowly ahead of Luke Arnold.

Meanwhile, Harry Lawson turned in the standout performance of the 9-hole flights, firing a 2-over-par 38 to win the Mini Division ahead of runner-up Romil Malde.

For the championship and development flights, Saturday’s play was hosted at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, while Sunday saw the players take to the North Sound Golf Club. This year marked the first year where both courses were involved for the championship level players.

The recreational divisions played on Sunday, with recreational intermediate at North Sound and the recreational beginner and mini at the Ritz-Carlton.

“The Junior Island Championship remains one of the most important events on our calendar and a wonderful showcase of the talent we have coming through our junior programmes,” the Cayman Islands Golf Association said.

“It was especially encouraging to see strong participation across all divisions, from our championship players to those just beginning their competitive golf journey.”
