Cayman's former chief justice has been knighted by King Charles III, and now officially bears the title Sir Anthony Smellie.

Margaret Ramsay-Hale has been sworn in as Cayman's first female chief justice in a public ceremony witnessed by political leaders, her fellow judges, the wider legal fraternity, and scores of viewers online.

Chief Justice Sir Anthony Smellie, who retires later this month, says a critical report by the Office of the Auditor General on the efficiencies of local courts ignored the ongoing impact a "chronic" lack of courtroom space has on how the system operates.

Margaret Ramsay-Hale will take over the reins of the judiciary as Cayman's new chief justice, effective 26 Oct., Governor Martyn Roper has announced.

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, courts in Cayman, will see "some comparatively small but nevertheless important changes", according to Chief Justice Anthony Smellie.
