Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton spoke out on Friday, 26 Jan., on the rising levels of gang crime in Grand Cayman, and in particular, in West Bay.

A man is in serious but stable condition after being shot multiple times outside a house on Gorse Lane in West Bay early this morning, Sunday, 5 Nov.

Four out of the seven shooting incidents that have occurred since April, in which two people were killed and 14 wounded, were gang-related, Deputy Police Commissioner Kurt Walton has confirmed.

Authorities have set up a committee to address gang violence in the Cayman Islands, Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne told Members of Parliament Monday.

Massively increased traffic enforcement, additional anti-gang training and the internal monitoring of criminal suspect “top 10” lists are all part of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s three-year public safety plan.

Police now suspect the two shootings on Monday, Boxing Day, are related to gang activity, according to a press release. An 18-year-old man was shot several times just before 4 a.m. outside of Fete Night Club.

Five arrests were made this week in connection with ongoing criminal activity around Grand Cayman as police responded to a flurry of what officers termed gang-related incidents on Tuesday in West Bay district. RCIPS officers arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the brutal assault of a man on Birch Tree Hill Road.

Gang-related violence that erupted within the past 48 hours in West Bay district appears to be the result of a revived feud between two groups and police attributed the incidents to “rising gang tensions” in a lengthy statement Wednesday. The violence culminated in the shooting of two people outside the Super C Restaurant on Tuesday.
