Laura Buttigieg stepped out of her hotel in the southern Guatemalan city of Antigua on Sunday to find the streets covered in ash. Lava and smoke were pouring from the crater of the nearby Volcan de Fuego.

The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and the Cooperative for Education inaugurated a new educational center in Antigua, Guatemala, on Feb. 10. The facility comes as part of the Guatemala Literacy Project, a textbook program that serves 193 schools.

Weather that led to the Cayman Islands being placed under tropical storm watch last week brought huge downpours, strong winds and damage across Belize, Guatemala and Mexico.

A group of Rotarians, including honorary member Governor Helen Kilpatrick, are heading to Guatemala next month to deliver textbooks to secondary schools and open a new computer center.
