Youth workers Larry Levers and Michael Anthony Stewart, charged in the drowning death of a 14-year-old boy in their care, were cleared Thursday of manslaughter charges.

Neither of the two youth workers on trial for manslaughter in relation in the 2015 drowning death of teenager Risco Batten could swim, Grand Court jurors heard on Thursday.

Youth worker Michael Anthony Stewart, who is accused of manslaughter in relation to the drowning death of a 14-year-old boy who was in his care, told a jury Wednesday that he not tried to help the boy because he could not swim.

Department of Environment officer Bradley Johnson, who took the witness stand Wednesday, 22 Jan., told the jury that an area of South Sound commonly called ‘Pull and Be Damned Point’, was a dangerous area for swimmers.

The trial of two men charged in relation to the drowning of 14-year-old Risco Batten began in the Grand Court on Friday. Michael Anthony Stewart and Larry Levers are jointly charged with manslaughter and cruelty to a child. At the time of the 2015 drowning, Stewart and Levers were both employed as senior youth supervisors and youth workers at the Bonaventure Boys Home, a government-owned facility that houses boys between the ages of 13 and 16.

Justice Timothy Owen adjourned sentencing in Grand Court on Friday for Waylon Timothy Rivers, 20, who pleaded guilty earlier in the week to a charge of manslaughter.

A former supervisor at Bonaventure Boys Home appeared in Summary Court just before noon on Friday after being extradited from the United States.

United States law enforcement authorities are attempting to extradite Jamaican national Larry Levers to Cayman, where he is wanted for manslaughter in relation to the November 2015 death of a teenager at the Bonaventure Boys Home in West Bay.
