Twenty-eight young Caymanians recently became the first group to successfully complete the Youth Financial Literacy Programme.

The National Youth Commission has launched a course to teach young Caymanians the best ways to handle their finances.

The twice-yearly “Proud of Them” award scheme is once again seeking to recognize excellence among young people in the Cayman Islands.

Nominations for the annual “Proud of Them” initiative, which honors the achievements of individual young people in the Cayman Islands, are now open.

The Ministry of Youth and the National Youth Commission announced Monday that nominations will be accepted until Nov. 6 for young people, ages 10 to 25, who have made notable achievements in academics, sports, their career, culture, business or community service.

Nearly a dozen reports on crime and the causes of crime have been produced for the Cayman Islands government since 2001, but very few of the recommendations have been followed, according to youth worker Michael Myles. Amid a crime wave that has seen four robberies, a home invasion and multiple drug arrests in the past week, Mr. Myles, the former at-risk youth officer for the Cayman Islands, warns that the territory is facing a multi-generational problem that successive governments have failed to deal with.
