Residents of Cayman Brac readily and regularly feed empty plastic water bottles and containers to a giant fish called Dory, made of PVC piping and netting, that is the face of plastic recycling on the island.

Over three clean-ups this month, Plastic Free Cayman volunteers have collected more than 1,000 pounds of litter and marine debris from the Safe Haven area, prompting the group to urge government to employ people to clean up local beaches and mangrove areas.

Garbage, especially plastics, has long been a problem on the beaches of Cayman.

The battle between Cayman’s swashbuckling buccaneers and single-use plastics will continue at this year’s upcoming Pirates Week when the festival adopts biodegradable products made from sugarcane and cornstarch.
