A major fire at a Cayman Brac landfill site has been brought under control, the fire service has said.

The operation, sparked after a blaze broke out at the dump on Tuesday, was said to be “scaling down”, although containment measures designed to smother the affected area continued.

Chief Fire Officer Randy Rankin said on Wednesday, “The professionalism and coordination of our Cayman Brac team alongside the Department of Environmental Health ensured that this fire was brought under control efficiently, minimising any potential risks to the public and the environment.”

An official added there was no further risk to the surrounding area and that a fire service team remained on station to tackle any hotspots.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, however, has asked the public to avoid the area while containment work continues.

People in areas affected by smoke from the blaze were earlier asked to keep windows and doors closed and stay indoors.
