John Elliott, President of the Rotary Club of Cayman, Central, Ray Whittaker, President of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and Chris Bowring, President of the Rotary Club of Cayman, Sunrise are meeting weekly to provide materials and labour to help Hurricane Ivan victims.
The three Rotary clubs in Grand Cayman have combined and donated nearly $300,000 from their own funds and from generous public donations from Cayman and abroad to help hurricane victims recover.
Their main thrust is to provide emergency help for those most badly effected by the storm who have no other means of assistance. They are working on several projects in Bodden Town, Sound Road and elsewhere and plans are afoot for a great deal more.
The immediate target for the fund is $1,000,000 made up of donated materials, donated labour, transportation and cash and there is a mechanism within Rotary International for matching grants which is being explored.
The Rotary Club of Cayman Brac has also been very active in sending cash, clothes and toys to Grand Cayman.
Rotary are still soliciting help for this fund. Donations of material, labour, cash or and service are most welcome and you may rest assured that every cent will go to a particularly deserving case right here on our doorstep. All fund recipients are carefully screened. All donations accounted and audited. If you can help, please speak to any Rotarian.
The three Grand Cayman presidents have a unique perspective of the extent of the problem. All three have lost their homes to Ivan and are temporarily living in other accommodations.
Total membership of Cayman Rotary clubs is 256 members. The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman meets Thursday lunchtimes at the Westin Hotel.
Cayman Central meet for dinner at the Marriot Hotel on Tuesday evenings. Sunrise meet for breakfast at the Grand Old House on Wednesday mornings.
