St. Ignatius goes bananas over reading

St. Ignatius School was teaming with storybook characters on Wednesday.

Three Little Pigs, fairies and their Godmothers, Batman, Pooh Bear, Spiderman, Catwoman, Peter Pan, Superman, Cinderella, Dr. Jeckle, Bugs Bunny, Sponge Bob and many more were all at this day’s outing.

As part of Gone Bananas Over Reading Day, students were encouraged all week to read a storybook and dress up as their favourite character.

Even the teachers got in on the act. Dressed as Dr. Jeckle and holding a vial of something pink, teacher Peter Embelton stirred excitement among the students. ‘Drink it! Drink it!’ they chanted in unison to the merriment of other teachers.

The dress up day was part of a three-and-a-half week reading programme called Go Bananas.

Organiser Jacqueline Schofield said the programme started last week with students dressing up for Brown-and-Yellow Dress Day or wearing an item with a monkey on it.

The programme will finish with a Banana Day Split, where guest readers will come in to read to each class.

Ms Schofield said students are reading three books per day. When they finish, book names are recorded on a bunch of paper bananas then hung on the banana tree located in the office.

Last week students submitted 150 banana bunches, totalling 450 books. At the end there will be a draw where students can win stuffed animals, books and gift certificates.

Slumber party

The day also involved a readathon slumber party.

Year 5 students brought in sleeping bags, comforters, air mattresses, lots of pillows and their favourite storybooks to read and share.

Teacher Carlin Howe said reading activities involved book talks, buddy reading, drawing storybook characters and individual reading.

Year one classes got a special treat when they were invited to the slumber party to be read to by Year 5 students.

If the students wanted to nod off during the slumber party, teacher Howe said she did not mind one bit – it was all a part of the slumber party reading day.
