CAL awarded for relocation of Castaways

Cayman Airways is being honoured with an award for its role in the overseas transportation of over 200 stray cats and dogs, termed Cayman Castaways, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.

Cayman Airways received an award from the Animal Transportation Association along with Houston’s Spay-Neuter Assistance Program and the Houston SPCA. The awards were to be presented at the association’s 31st Annual Conference in Calgary, Alberta Canada on Tuesday 3 May.

The award is given to a person or organisation that has demonstrated care and concern for animals in transport, and has also exhibited an outstanding job in promoting animal welfare. Cayman Airways is being awarded for its role in the airlift of medicinal supplies and food into Cayman from the US and the carrying of cats and dogs to Houston, Texas where they found new homes. The transportation was done free of charge.

CEO and President of Cayman Airways Ltd. Mike Adam commented, ‘We are pleased to be associated with the SNAP and the Houston SPCA in this award and look forward to working as a partner in this important effort.’

Houston’s SNAP responded to emergency calls from the Cayman Islands Humane Society’s Dave Olson and Pamela Hart in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. SNAP provided veterinarians, animal technicians, a power generator, and more than $20,000 in animal food, veterinary drugs, and supplies to help animals displaced by Hurricane Ivan. This was all generously flown in by Cayman Airways. The airline also transported all animals for adoption to the United States with no charge.
