Digicel assists schools

As a result of assistance provided to East End Primary School following Hurricane Ivan, Digicel has been commended by the Ministry of Education for its role in helping schools recover.

Digicel was among several private sector companies and government departments that were presented with awards by the Ministry at an appreciation function held recently at Prospect Primary School.

Digicel’s award arose out of its sponsorship and support of the East End Surf Challenge jet ski race in January which enabled race organizers to donate funds to East End Primary School.

In addition, since Hurricane Ivan, Digicel has spearheaded its own Helping Hands programme, through which every school child in the Cayman Islands will receive a free backpack.

‘Digicel has been pleased to assist Cayman’s recovery effort in every way, as exemplified by our donation of over US$1.5 million which provided goods and services including food and water, building supplies, call credit, free transistor radios and car chargers, among other services. Even now, eight months after Ivan, we are pleased to continue our support and to help the education sector, in particular,’ Digicel’s CEO Mr. J.D. Buckley noted in a press release.
