Incumbent Edna Moyle reclaimed her seat in the Legislative Assembly Wednesday, winning a clear majority in the district of North Side.
The People’s Progressive Movement representative captured 56.4 per cent of the ballots cast, tallying 278 votes.
United Democratic Party candidate Alex Johnson won 30.8 per cent (152 votes) and independent candidate Derrington ‘Bo’ Miller earned 12.8 per cent (63 votes).
Amid cheers, whistles and honking horns, Ms Moyle said she was confident of a win but the campaign was difficult at times.
‘It was a hard battle but I fought it with dignity and in a professional manner.’
The native North Sider pledged to work to unite the district.
‘Unfortunately, elections have divided this district. My goal is to bring this district back to a united front to work together for the betterment of the district,’ she said. ‘I can assure you I will represent all people of North Side.’
She said her priorities for the district include programmes for youth, a senior citizens centre along with ‘a school that is well-equipped and well-staffed.’
Nationally, she said the PPM mandate would focus on education, crime, the economy and fiscal responsibility.
At the announcement of the results, PPM supporters waiting outside of the polling station in the Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre rushed through the barricades to congratulate their newly-elected representative.
‘From the day I voted, she was my lady,’ said an elated Angie Johnson, who was among more than 100 supporters gathered in the PPM camp. ‘We know she does a good job, that’s why we’re behind her. Once we get the UDP out, we can do our thing.’
While final results weren’t announced until shortly after 9pm, the large number of PPM supporters that turned out and the postal ballot results – which put Ms Moyle ahead – gave an early indication of who would win the seat.
‘I guess the people of North Side didn’t want a change,’ said Mr. Miller while leaving the polling station. ‘But I congratulate her. Now, it’s time to take care of myself.’
Ms Moyle has represented the district in the Legislative Assembly since 1992. She served as Minister for Community Services from November 2000 to November 2001 and as Deputy Speaker of the LA from 1995-96.
Of the 570 eligible voters in North Side, 503 ballots were cast, a turn-out of 88.25 per cent.
