Russian hepatitis-A outbreak

MOSCOW (AP) – The public health service in Russia’s central Tver region has blamed a local soft-drink maker for an outbreak of hepatitis A that has infected 547 people, an epidemiologist said Monday.

Thirty-four new cases were reported over the past 24 hours fewer than in previous days reflecting the slowing pace of the outbreak, said Lyudmila Tkachenko of the public health service in Rzhev, the town worst hit by the illness.

She said that nonalcoholic drinks produced by the Rzhev brewery were to blame for the outbreak.

Hepatitis A is transmitted through food or water and is often spread due to poor sanitary or personal hygiene practices.
