Tropical Storm Arlene put a stop to four cruise ships anchoring off Cayman shores on Thursday and seas were still too rough Friday morning for the one scheduled ship’s passengers to disembark.
The rough seas were not safe for the cruise-tender boats to carry passengers from the ships to land, said Port Facility Security Officer with the Port Authority Joseph Woods.
Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas,, with a passenger capacity of 3,840, cancelled its stop in Grand Cayman on Friday because of big swells in George Town.
On Thursday, Tropical Storm Arlene’s heavy rain and rough seas stopped five ships — Rhapsody of the Seas, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Victory, Mariner of the Seas and Holiday Dream — from making their port of call in George Town.
Earlier in the week, Wednesday saw the Imagination, Inspiration and Caribbean Princess make scheduled stops, while on Tuesday Zuiderdam, Carnival Miracle and Voyager of the Seas visited.
Meanwhile, Mr. Woods said that security plans for the Spotts Dock facility had been submitted to TRANSEC, part of the Department for Transport in the United Kingdom, for approval.
TRANSEC has overall responsibility for implementing the International Maritime Organisation’s requirements for new port security standards.
The Spotts facility needs to come up to special International Ship and Port Security standards if it is to be used as an alternative docking area when seas are too rough in George Town.
