UDP loses two

In spite of the resignations of two senior members of the United Democratic Party, the opposition party said it ‘voted unanimously to continue supporting’ McKeeva Bush as its leader at the executive committee meeting last week.

UDP deputy leader and former Cabinet minister Gilbert McLean and former cabinet minister Roy Bodden both officially resigned from the party with letters written last Wednesday.

At the meeting the day before, the rest of the attending UDP executive committee and legislative assembly members showed ‘total confidence in Mr. Bush’s ability to continue leading the party forward for the betterment of the Cayman Islands’, it was stated in a press release from the party.

UDP Chairman Billy Reid praised Mr. Bush’s accomplishments.

‘Mr. Bush’s abilities and track record in leading the country through what was undeniably one of the worst times in our history proves that he is a true leader,’ he said.

The party’s press release said: ‘Mr. Bush’s ability to develop and implement sound economic and fiscal policies is an integral part of his leadership and these attributes will certainly be needed to ensure that the party is successful as Her Majesty’s loyal opposition’.

Mr Bush expressed gratitude for the vote of confidence.

‘I am extremely pleased that the members of the executive and the legislative members have expressed their full support for my position as the leader of the party and the opposition,’ he said. ‘I want to add that I will continue to work as I have done for over 20 years for the people of the Cayman Islands so that the interests of all the people are protected.’

Mr. Bodden wished the Party well in its future endeavours.

‘I… hope it may continue as a viable entity in the Caymanian political life,’ he stated.

Mr. McLean said in his resignation letter that he would publicly reply to ‘various criticisms stated about my ministerial performance by some party members’ at a time and place of his choosing.
