Wounded turtle escapes

The wounded green sea turtle found in East End waters earlier this week has escaped.

The female turtle, between 30 years old 40 years old, was being kept in a holding tank at Sunset House, but somehow caught wind of plans to move him. She swam the coop.

The Department of Environment planned to have the creature properly secured early on Wednesday, but the turtle preferred the wild, heading for open sea late on Monday night or early on Tuesday morning.

‘It is good that the turtle was able to make its escape,’ said DEO research officer Joni Solomon. ‘It shows that the operation done on the turtle did not hamper it in any way and it was in good enough health to make its escape.’

Although the turtle was seriously injured and missing one fin, Ms Solomon said that would not stop the turtle from nesting in the wild.

‘Right now we are continuing to monitor the waters in East End to see if maybe the turtle did lay eggs, and returns to the beach,’ she said.

Officers are also asking the public and area fishermen to watch for a turtle with a single fin and to call the department if they see her.
