Although grey skies glowered on riders and onlookers gathered at Royal Palms beach on Monday for Jet Around Cayman, the sun managed to peek through at intervals and moods could not be dampened.
The usual sight of masses of people under a sunlit sky was altered into a much smaller crowd of jet-ski racing enthusiasts, a dark sky overhead, coupled with those wishing to enjoy a day with a difference.
The tempo was kept upbeat by the sounds of music pumping from speakers on the beach and after the race’s 12pm start; more people began to spill onto the sand as the dreary clouds dispersed slightly.
The water was clear as glass, but broke up in sprays as jet skis began to slash out to sea for the race’s start. Then it was full steam ahead as the machines ripped their way through the water on their journey around Grand Cayman.
Music and cool beverages kept the spectators entertained while they waited just more than an hour for riders to jet back to shore for the race’s finish.
Children splashed in the shallow waters and teens took a stroll around to see who they could meet.
The crowds had grown by the time the winners arrived back onshore. Cheers and hugs from well wishers greeted competitors as they dismounted.
Complications prolonged the results, and it was 5pm until the outcome was announced, by which time a lot of fun had been enjoyed at Royal Palms.
