No Deputy Leader

The Cayman Islands Government has no Deputy Leader of Government Business, Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts revealed at a Cabinet press briefing on Friday.

‘There is no constitutional provision for a Deputy Leader of Government Business, so we made a conscious decision not the have one,’ Mr. Tibbetts said. ‘That’s not to say we won’t have one in the future,’ he said later.

Mr. Tibbetts said the provision for a Deputy Leader could be addressed as part of the planned constitutional reform.

Under the previous United Democratic Party, former Cabinet minister Gilbert McLean acted as deputy leader.

As it stands, should the leader of government business die or become incapacitated by illness or injury, the remaining Cabinet would have to decide on a replacement.
