The impact of Hurricane Katrina on the United States’ Gulf Coast may have positive benefits for tourism in the Cayman Islands and Caribbean in general.
When questioned by The Caymanian Compass on the possible effects of Katrina on tourism here, Minister for Tourism Charles Clifford said he believes that the Caribbean region may benefit from more US tourism now that New Orleans is no longer a major tourist destination.
‘Clearly New Orleans, being a very major US city, is also a major tourist attraction and it is now out of commission,’ he said.
‘I believe the Caribbean region will benefit from that,’ he said.
Speaking of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Mr. Clifford was quick to add, ‘Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes and loved ones and they continue to be in our thoughts and prayers’.
