Boating is one of the most popular recreational activities in Cayman, and many people who move to Cayman become first-time boat owners.

There are also those who have minimal boating experience and little familiarity with local waters. It is important for all boaters to have the basic knowledge and skills to safely operate and navigate their boats.

Professional Yacht Management has partnered with International Yacht Training Worldwide to become an authorized training and instructor school. International Yacht Training is internationally recognized by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency – United Kingdom.

If you’re looking for a Father’s Day gift for the man who has everything – including a boat – then a gift certificate for one of these courses may be just the ticket.

Certified courses

Pro Yacht offers certified courses for all levels of boaters, ranging from Personal Watercraft and VHF Communications to its most popular course, Small Powerboat and RIB Master. This two-day course covers basic safety equipment and procedures, anchoring, docking and boat handling under power.

The first day is spent in the classroom at its facility at the Cayman Islands Yacht Club. The second day is the practical portion of the course, when the students are out on the water with the instructor. Students who complete the course receive a certificate.

Classroom training is a part of certain courses, held in a room at the Pro Yacht facility.

Tailored training

Pro Yacht also offers non-certified courses, as well as training on an hourly basis. This allows the training to be tailored to suit the needs of each boater. One of the courses is “Boating 101.” Quite often, parents take their children out on the water for a day of tubing, fishing or snorkeling, but they may not take into account what could happen to their children if something were to happen to their folks. Do your children know how to call for help on the VHF? Would they be able to direct emergency responders to their location? Do they know where the safety gear is located? If they’re of age, could they pull the anchor and drive the boat to shore?

Happy couples boat together

The company also offers a course aptly named “Marriage Counseling,” designed to avoid arguments between partners on the high seas. This course teaches a spouse how to tie a dock line and how to drop and pull the anchor, and provides an orientation of the waters in the North Sound. Both courses are two three-hour sessions conducted by one of Pro Yacht’s captains.

Whether you want to become a certified operator or you just want to become more familiar and comfortable with operating your boat, Pro Yacht’s goal is to make boating in Cayman safe by teaching boaters the basics of operation and safety.
