After 21 years of experience in London and Hong Kong, Attorney Michael Firth has been called to the Bar of the Cayman Islands. He appeared before Mrs. Justice Priya Levers for admission in the Grand Court formal ceremony.
His application was sponsored by Maples and Calder and made by the firm’s current Head of Litigation, Andrew Jones QC.
Mr. Firth is taking over from Mr Jones as Head of Litigation at Maples and Calder, according to a press release from the firm.
Having spent the last 21 years as the firm’s Head of Litigation, Mr Jones will be retiring at the end of the year but will still continue to act as counsel to the firm.
Mr Firth brings to Maples and Calder his 21 years legal experience with Linklaters in London and Hong Kong, including 12 years as a litigation partner and four years as head of Linklaters’ litigation department in Hong Kong.
Mr Firth is a commercial litigation lawyer, with many years experience in a wide range of complex, multi-jurisdictional and multi-party disputes. His caseload has included disputes in the following areas: financial services, banking and securities, contentious regulatory, corporate and shareholder, commercial contracts, insurance and international trade.
He is experienced in arbitration, mediation and other forms of dispute resolution as well as court litigation, and he has often advised on dispute avoidance, dispute resolution clauses and on all forms of dispute resolution mechanisms for commercial contracts. He drafted the arbitration rules for an industry association in the UK and for one of the London exchanges. He is a CEDR Registered Mediator.
Mr Firth said ‘It is a great privilege to be admitted as an attorney in the Cayman Islands, and I am very pleased to be working with Maples and Calder.’
Mrs. Justice Levers welcomed Mr Firth to the Cayman Islands bar and indicated he was joining a wonderful team at Maples and Calder. She noted that his predecessor has made a sterling contribution to this jurisdiction.
