Today’s Editorial October 6:Thank you for 40 years

40 years.

That’s how long this company has been printing and publishing a newspaper for the readers and advertisers of the Cayman Islands.

And it has been a pleasure all the way.

Over the years we have strived to do our best to present to you a fair, honest and balanced report of the news as it happens in this country.

It is a mission that is as strong today as ever.

We firmly believe that the publications of Cayman Free Press are the true reflections of daily life in the Cayman Islands.

We may tend to err to the side of conservatism in our newspaper, the Caymanian Compass, but we believe that balanced reporting giving readers the facts so they can form their own decisions is more helpful in this democracy than sensational headlines and out-of-proportion stories.

And a glance through the pages of our newspaper in the past 40 years will prove to anyone that this company doesn’t shy away from controversy.

Where we see a wrong, we will make every effort to right it.

Where we see good being done, we will applaud it and do everything in our power to make sure it gets attention.

We haven’t and won’t side with one government party or another. Our mission is to be balanced, presenting both sides of every argument.

And if you catch us failing at our job, we expect you to let us know.

We are not perfect by any means.

We know mistakes are made, but we have made sure there is a way of letting readers notify us when they see incorrect information, which we gladly put right.

For the past 40 years we’ve shared this country’s joys and tears, ups and downs, disasters and recoveries.

The past year has been particularly difficult for us all, businesses and individuals alike.

Hurricane Ivan was, to use what has now become a cliché, a great equalizer; the ravages of the storm put us all on the same footing.

But we found that we are made of stern stuff, all of us.

We’ve all worked together to help rebuild this country.

One of the most daunting challenges facing Cayman Free Press after the storm was the lack of a building and not knowing if we would have a business for our employees to return to.

But like the rest of the country, we took stock in what was left, rolled up our shirt sleeves and got back down to the business we love most – providing you with accurate, fair and balanced reporting.

We’ve evoked a lot of emotion over the past 40 years and we thank each of you for sticking by us.

Here’s to the next 40 years.
