It’s time to fish or cut bait.
Or if you prefer, to wade in the shallows or go down deep.
Tourism Minister Charles Clifford assured us all in the Cayman Islands Wednesday night that Government doesn’t have wet feet when it comes to a true, dedicated Scuba Diving Hall of Fame.
In fact, Government is actively looking for the appropriate site for a museum honouring the greats of the dive industry here in the Cayman Islands.
We hope they make the decision soon.
There are rumblings that entities in Florida already see the benefits of such a museum of hall of fame for divers. Tapping in to that market, they know, will mean extra tourists and extra dollars.
Florida is too close for comfort when it comes to attracting top divers the world over.
And we believe Cayman has a lot more to offer those lovers of the deep ocean than our neighbours to the north.
We’ve been waiting five long years for an appropriate place to recognize the divers this country honours each year. We understand the Hurricane Ivan put a damper on the plans last year, but Ivan is over and it’s time to move on.
Several more divers were inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame just this week.
How fitting it would have been to honour and recognize them in their own Hall of Fame.
There is talk of putting a Hall of Fame in downtown George Town near the waterfront.
That’s a grand idea.
It would be an excellent addition to the Cayman Islands’ cache of land-based attractions and it would offer an opportunity to showcase how Cayman led the world in the development of Scuba as a sport.
Those inducted into the Scuba Hall of Fame are a special breed. They are pioneers, artists and entrepreneurs.
They’ve strived hard to make the sport more fun and safer for all.
It is wonderful that the Cayman Islands takes time out each year to recognize these special people – those still living and those who have gone before them.
Now it’s time to show the rest of the world with a permanent structure just how dedicated we are to showing those special people just how proud we are of them and their accomplishments.
