The Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association is celebrating the silver anniversary of the Texaco Pirates’ Week 5k Sea Swim this Saturday, October 29th, 2005 at 8:00am at the Courtyard Marriott beach. Registration for the race will be held on the beach prior to the swim from 7:00-7:45am. The course will consist of a 5k loop starting from the Courtyard Marriott beach, with a turnaround buoy in the vicinity of the Hyatt Hotel. Given the long-distance of the race, there will be a 2 1/2 hr time limit for finishing, and participants under 12 require explicit permission from their parent and swim coach to take part in the race.
The first Pirates’ Week sea swim, consisting of a three mile course from the George Town dock to the Galleon Beach Hotel, was held on the 26th of October, 1980, with 12 swim enthusiasts finishing the race out of 22 entrants.
The Pirates’ Week swim has been held every year since with the exception of last year when the event was cancelled in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, this year being the 25th year of the event.
The top four finishers of the 25th Texaco Pirates’ Week 5k Sea Swim will be awarded plaques provided by the Pirates’ Week Organizing Committee, and the top three male and female finishers in all age groups will be awarded trophies. All participants will be provided a Texaco swim cap to be worn during the race upon registration, as well as T-shirts and refreshments after the race.
