Thrilling competition in Cayman badminton tournament

Fierce competition in a number of matches marked the recent Badminton Open tournament, held from 28th November to 2nd December at Cayman Prep & High School. Hosted by the Cayman Islands Badminton Association and sponsored by Castaways Grille, the competition included men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles and mixed doubles and was marked by a number of exciting upsets.

The competition began with the women’s singles on Monday, 28th November leading to the final match being dominated by number one seeded Loraine Gillies with a score of 11-3 against number two seeded Christina McTaggart.

Despite both teams playing a number of close matches, Lorraine Gillies again proved unbeatable, as she along with teammate Kavita Thomas, defeated the team of Charlene LeBlanc and Gay Frye 15-3 in the finals.

Stiff competition followed in the men’s singles, including a very close 15 – 14 win by number three seeded Don Calloo over Chris Cole of the #1seed.

The tournament continued on Tuesday, 29th November with the men’s doubles matches and a close final that saw the number one ranked Chris Cole and number seven ranked Keith Whitley earn a 15-13 win over the number four ranked Raymond Richmond and number seven ranked Balan Murugesu.

A full week of tournament play came to an exciting conclusion with the mixed doubles, which had the highest participation of players and led to a total of 51 matches in order to determine the champions.

Contested over two days, the next to last match on the second day resulted with the team of Wray Banker/Kavita Thomas defeating Chris Cole and Christina McTaggart 15-13 to enter the final. They were however defeated 15 – 4 by the winning doubles team of Don Calloo and Lorraine Gillies.

Lorraine dominated the competition and emerged the only player to win in three categories.
