The 2006 IRG Junior Rugby Festival drew hundreds of enthusiastic players to South Sound on Saturday. The annual event allows Cayman’s younger players to show their skills, talent and competitiveness before fans and family.
The day’s matches were consistently thrilling, showcasing the play of toddlers through teens. Youth rugby clearly has come of age in Cayman under the leadership of Union president Derek Haines and technical director Richard Adams.
The all-day festival also showed just how successful the Cayman Islands program has become in recent years in building a diverse base of players drawn from both locals and expats.
Well-played female youth matches also indicated that the sport is gaining ground with the girls as well.
Governor Stuart Jack officially re-opened the Cayman Rugby Football Union clubhouse that had been damaged by Hurricane Ivan.
