Ogier raises $26,000 for charity
The Friday Dress-Down Day programme at Ogier raised more than CI$26,000 for various charities in 2005.
Each Friday, staff pay for the privilege to dress down. The collections are then matched monthly by the firm and awarded to 12 different charities, which were pre-selected at the beginning of the year by the staff.
The recipient charities were UNICEF (in support of the tsunami victims), the National Recovery Fund, the Batabano Children’s parade, Cayman Islands Cancer Society, Cayman Islands Red Cross, Cayman Islands Humane Society, NCVO’s Nadine Andreas Residential Foster Home, Big Brothers/Sisters, Cayman Hospice Care, National Museum, Cayman Islands Crisis Centre and the Department of Family Welfare Toy Drive.
The funds sponsored specific projects, including sending kids to camp and fundraising activities such as the Humane Society calendar and the Hospice Care Christmas gift wrapping campaign.
‘We selected all local charities save one. Supporting UNICEF in the face of the tsunami was a project that touched so many of us because of our familiarity with disaster so soon after Ivan,’ said Denise Gower, marketing and business development manager of Ogier.
‘The local projects were well-supported by the Ogier staff, not just in a monetary sense, but in many cases, there were teams of people volunteering their time to assist in the projects that we funded.’
The first charitable recipient for 2006 was once again UNICEF, in support of the earthquake victims in Pakistan. The US$4,462 raised will be used to distribute clean water, clothing and shelter to the victims, as well as ‘New Emergency Health Kits’ which contains all the drugs, medical supplies and equipment necessary to cater for the health needs of the affected people, the release said.
Marissa Buckanoff of the US Fund for UNICEF was pleased to receive the donation from Ogier. ‘Our efforts in Pakistan to assist the survivors there are increasingly important as winter sets in and the housing, clothing and nutritional needs of the displaced people becomes more pressing. This donation will go a long way to ease the suffering of many.’
Ms Buckanoff went on to explain that UNICEF is always in need of additional funds as they had a number of initiatives that are currently under way, including a global immunisation initiative and other forgotten emergencies such as the Malawi food crisis.
The Ogier staff has selected the National Recovery Foundation as the recipient for its February donation.
