Experienced policeman Steve Myers is being introduced as the Community Beat Officer for West Bay.
With more than 17 years experience in the RCIP under his belt, PC Myers has worked in most of the districts on the island.
At one time, according to an RCIP press release, he was attached to the juvenile bureau, where part of his duties involved being a school liaison officer.
‘I really enjoy working with children as it does have its rewards,’ said PC Myers.
‘The department was very challenging and at times frustrating as you cannot take all the children under your wing.’
‘I dealt with many issues, including criminal and family matters that are generally sensitive and extremely confidential,’ he said.
‘I take satisfaction in seeing people I used to take to court turning a new leaf and being productive citizens in the community. That is what is so rewarding about this job, seeing people make a difference,’ he added.
Trained in many different fields that will help him with his role in the Community Relations Department, PC Myers has recently completed an advanced gang investigation course in Florida.
‘As a beat officer, my role involves meeting peoples’ needs within the community. I also offer support to people who need someone to talk to and spend a lot of time talking to young people, encouraging them to get an education which is so vital in our changing world,’ he said.
PC Myers has initiated many community projects including the Easter Egg Run in 2004, which raised more than $7,000.
One of his latest projects – introducing the boys from Bonaventure to skateboarding – has already proved a success.
He will also be continuing to do clean ups in known drug areas.
PC Myers can be reached on 916-5463.
