Department of Tourism staff member and former Ministry of Tourism scholar Jermaine Sharpe departed for London last week to take up a temporary position within the Department of Tourism’s European office in London.
Jermaine, who currently works as Tourism Services Officer in Cayman, will cover for an employee while she is on Maternity Leave through June 2006, says a press release from DoT.
Minister for Tourism, Charles Clifford commented, ‘The long-term success of tourism in Cayman is guaranteed if we can attract and retain qualified Caymanians to the industry, and job enrichment is one way in which we can achieve this. This is a fantastic opportunity for Jermaine to experience a different working environment within DoT, and I wish him the very best.’
‘I am going to use this chance to grow both personally and professionally and I would like to thank everyone who played a part in making the move happen,’ enthused Jermaine. ‘I intend to make the most of the opportunity given to me and see it as a stepping stone in my career. I hope that it makes people realise there are chances out there if you are patient and willing to put in the work to succeed.’
Regional Manager for UK and Europe Don McDougall said that he looked forward to welcoming Jermaine to the London office. ‘I am a strong believer in the policy of internal staff secondments because the rich experience to be gained from working and living in a foreign environment can only benefit the employee and the organisation as a whole,’ said Mr. McDougall. ‘The added benefit is that we will again have a Caymanian in the London office dealing with prospective customers and disseminating the very latest information on the Cayman Islands. Having Jermaine answering our phones and fronting our consumer exhibition stands will ensure that his first hand knowledge of Cayman converts passive interest into actual sales and bookings for the Cayman Islands.
‘Finally, once Jermaine’s secondment is complete and he returns to head office, we will have an additional person who fully understands the nuances of the European market and he will be better positioned to support the future activities of the London office.’
