Cayman boxer Charles Whittaker’s proposed fight – scheduled to take place here later this month – is off. A disappointed Whittaker told the Caymanian Compass on Wednesday that, although a lot of financial support had been offered for the promotion, it was not sufficient to allow the event to go ahead. Whittaker was due to fight Costa Rican Humberto Aranda in Cayman on 24 February. About $25,000 in promisory sponsorship had been obtained but that fell short of the $65,000 target, he explained. Whittaker also indicated that this was a difficult time for him in other ways because of the recent death of Mr. Dalmain Ebanks, who had come to be known as the father of Cayman boxing and who was very close to the fighter. ‘I am upset and disappointed at the moment,’ said Whittaker.
‘With that death and with the struggle to get the finance together my heart has gone out of a little bit,’ he said.
‘My focus has gone away from the promotion at this time,’ he added.
But Whittaker has a firm ‘I will be back’ message for his army of fans over here.
‘I am going back to Florida to train and fight and to get over the disappointment,’ he told the Compass. ‘I am going to regroup and fight in the United States but I will be back,’ he said.
‘I want to tell the fans that I have not forgotten them and I am sorry for disappointing them. A lot of people were looking forward to the fight and a lot of the sponsors are very disappointed. I want to thank them anyway,’ he said.
