Pole fire disrupts electricity service

Many Caribbean Utilities Company customers in George Town experienced a loss of electrical power after a pole near its corporate headquarters on North Sound Road caught fire early yesterday morning.

In a press release issued late Monday morning, CUC said it was a critical pole that supported four of the company’s distribution feeders that caught fire.

CUC immediately de-energised all lines to the pole, resulting in loss of electrical service to consumers in the central George Town, Airport and North Sound Road areas.

After securing the damaged pole, CUC line crews commenced the restoration process. By 8.26am all customers, except for the area immediately around the damaged pole, were re-energised.

Customers on North Sound Road, from Red Gate Road extending eastwards to the North Sound Barcadere were not re-energised until late afternoon, after the installation of a new pole and hardware was completed.

Pole fires occur periodically due to salt contamination of wooden poles, CUC said. Salt contamination results when there are high winds and rough seas, which carry salt spray across the Island.

CUC said it regretted the inconvenience caused to customers affected by yesterday’s outage.
