Baggage rules

I am sure that the majority of Cayman residents have welcomed the soon to start service of Spirit Airlines to Fort Lauderdale.

It will, at last, give us an affordable alternative to the present carrier.

Having just booked a flight to Fort Lauderdale with Spirit, I chose to read the small print of their conditions.

I was a little concerned when I saw that they have a weight restriction of 50lbs per piece of checked luggage (compared to 70lbs with CAL and others).

In addition they restrict checked and carry on luggage to bags only, specifically excluding cardboard boxes etc.

I have written to Spirit seeking clarification on the ‘cardboard box’ interpretation and they have replied at length but have commented as follows (and I quote from their fax of 1 February): ‘Spirit Airlines does not allow the transportation of any cardboard or plastic boxes, whether properly or improperly packed. This is due to size and space restrictions, boxes occupy more space and are less accommodating than baggage.’

They will take overweight bags at a charge of 51lbs – 70lbs $25 and 71lbs – 90lbs $250 per bag.

As many residents visit the US for the purpose of shopping and return with TV sets and all manner of boxed items they should be aware of the Spirit restrictions.

Whilst I am sure I will be taking advantage of the new Spirit service I will restrict it to trips that will not put me outside their stringent baggage rules.
