With all the pressing issues facing Cayman, it seems unbelievable that the Cayman Minister’s Association decided to make such a huge issue out of the arrival of a cruise ship containing Gay and Lesbian passengers.
While the rest of the world has grown up and accepted that homosexuality is a natural phenomenon, the CMA seems determined to stick its head in the sand and pretend that it doesn’t exist.
A person’s sexual orientation is a part of a person’s fundamental makeup. Just as some people prefer red wine over white wine, some people prefer homosexual relationships over heterosexual ones. It is patently absurd to suggest that a person is at risk of becoming a homosexual just because they happen to be around those that are. You cannot ‘catch’ homosexuality.
I know there are some people in Cayman that still have reservations about the lifestyle of homosexual people. That’s fine, but before you start protesting and demanding the government steps in to ban future guy cruises, ask yourself this; why would a person choose to be gay? Even in the enlightened world homosexuals still face some discrimination and intolerance. The answer is therefore quite simple – Gay people do not choose to be homosexual, they are homosexual.
There is no place for preaching bigotry and hatred towards anyone, including homosexuals. The word of God has been used to justify persecution of a variety of groups throughout history and this is no different. The CMA should think outside the square and ask itself what is more Christian, to preach hatred, or to love thy neighbour? After all, we are all God’s children.
