CARIFTA swimming hopefuls are looking for support for a Sponsored Swim Saturday, Feb 25th.
Using the theme of ‘From Georgetown to Bridgetown’, the youngsters will enter the water near the Wharf Restaurant and swim to the West Bay Cemetery. The event is organized by the Cayman Islands Amateur Swim Association, (CIASA) who need help to ensure that every child who qualifies will be able to go to Barbados for CARIFTA.
All the CARIFTA hopefuls train six days per week. They start their day jumping into a cold pool, often half asleep, then swim several miles while most of the rest of Cayman is still tucked in their warm beds. After school they train again before going home to do homework. All so they can face other Caribbean swimmers living the same life style. They deserve support, say organisers of the event.
CARIFTA is both an age-group track and swim competition. Track is broken into just two age groups, swimmers into three, the youngest being 11-12 yrs.
The CARIFTA Swim competition will be in Barbados April 6-9th, Track competition in Guadeloupe the 14-19th.
CARIFTA has been a key factor in the improvement of competitive swimming in the Caribbean and Cayman swimmers have been a key factor in the improvement of CARIFTA competition.
Cayman swimmers prepare well enough to challenge and the notion that a small island can’t compete.
